Destrukto Virus Removal

To manually remove this virus, do the following:

1. Download a replacement to task manager such as Process Manager by Sysinternals at http://www.networkworld.com/community/?q=node/4241.

2. Open a command prompt window and go to windows\system32 and get ready to rename WSCRIPT.EXE by typing rename WSCRIPT.EXE WSCRIPT.TMP (or delete it).

3. Run Process Manager and kill the WSCRIPT process and then run the rename or delete command on the WSCRIPT.EXE.

4. Once WSCRIPT.EXE is renamed or deleted, you will most likely get a Windows message that system files are changed or deleted. Cancel the dialog box when prompted. The script will no longer be able to pop up the DESTRUKTO Internet Explorer page.

5. Download a registry editor such as mpam4_regedit_xp from http://www.patheticcockroach.com/mpam4/ind...?p=61&id=14.

6. Run the registry editor and reverse the key changes the virus made. Change them back so everything is enabled:

ran.regwrite "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Window Title","DESTRUKTO!!!!!"

ran.regwrite "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Explorer",wendows&"\system32\explorar.vbs"

ran.regwrite "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoFind",1,"REG_DWORD"

ran.regwrite "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoRun",1,"REG_DWORD"

ran.regwrite "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\DisableRegistryTools",1,"REG_DWORD"

ran.regwrite "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\DisableTaskMgr",1,"REG_DWORD"

ran.regwrite "HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\ShowSuperHidden",0,"REG_DWORD"

ran.regwrite "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer\NoFolderOptions",1,"REG_DWORD"

ran.regwrite "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore\DisableConfig",1,"REG_DWORD"

ran.regwrite "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\SystemRestore\DisableSR",1,"REG_DWORD"

ran.regwrite "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\NoDriveTypeAutoRun",0,"REG_DWORD"

7. Reboot after the registry changes and then run MSCONFIG and remove the line referencing a RUN command for EXPLORAR.VBS.

That's it. You should be good to go. Below is a copy of the Windows Script that runs when the machine is infected. You can see how the script works.

I am hoping Spyware and Virus companies will contact Eugene Young or I to create definitions so that there is an automatic removal for non technical users.

TestDisk - Best FREE Tool for Partition Recovery

Nothing beats a free software that can do what other commercial software can't. If you are looking for a partition recovery software, this one is for you. This open-source software saved me today from a possible one to three-hour work in recovering partitions that suddenly disappear. It only took less than five minutes to recover missing partitions.

You can run this program from windows or you can use Test Disk Live Rescue CD. The only downside of this program is it still uses dos interface even when you run it in windows instead of more friendly-user GUI. So you might need to read first the documentation before using it. As for me, i don't care as long as it gets the job done.

From their website:

TestDisk is a powerful free data recovery software! It was primarily designed to help recover lost partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error (such as accidentally deleting a Partition Table). Partition table recovery using TestDisk is really easy.

TestDisk can

* Fix partition table, recover deleted partition
* Recover FAT32 boot sector from its backup
* Rebuild FAT12/FAT16/FAT32 boot sector
* Fix FAT tables
* Rebuild NTFS boot sector
* Recover NTFS boot sector from its backup
* Fix MFT using MFT mirror
* Locate ext2/ext3 Backup SuperBlock

TestDisk has features for both novices and experts. For those who know little or nothing about data recovery techniques, TestDisk can be used to collect detailed information about a non-booting drive which can then be sent to a tech for further analysis. Those more familiar with such procedures should find TestDisk a handy tool in performing onsite recovery.

TestDisk can run under

* DOS (either real or in a Windows 9x DOS-box),
* Windows (NT4, 2000, XP, 2003),
* Linux,
* FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD,
* SunOS and
* MacOS

You can download it here
Documentation and how-to can be found here

"Incompatible modem codec detected, please check your modem card" error

Somebody brought in an HP Pavilion ze4900 laptop yesterday (the exact model is ze4938ea according to the sticker), and the owner said that she cannot connect to the internet neither via dial up nor her broadband connection. This laptop came from abroad (middle east) and she just started using it this week to replace her desktop.

So i powered it up, and whenever i start the default dial-up connection, this error shows up:

Motorola SM56 Modem Helper
Incompatible modem codec detected, please check your modem card.

Whenever you receive an error while trying to start a dial-up connection, the first thing to do is check whether the computer has the correct driver for the modem installed. I go to the HP support website, fired up the Automatic Detection option to know the exact model of this laptop, and check for the appropriate driver.

My suspicion is right. According to the driver download page of HP Pavilion ZE4938ea this laptop uses a CONEXANT modem, and the error shown above is for MOTOROLA SM56 modem. So the former owner of this laptop installed the wrong driver. I downloaded the right one, installed it, and the dial-up connection is now working.

Problem 1 solved.

Next to solve is the internet connection via LAN Card. I hooked the laptop to my switch and the laptop automatically assigned an IP address. So it seems that it is working well. Fired up Internet Explorer (yes, it is the only available browser, no firefox installed) and the dreaded "Server not found" appear.

I quickly fired up the command prompt, use ipconfig to ping my router, and there is a reply. I also ping yahoo and google, there's also a reply. Odd.

So i checked the Lan settings (control panel > internet options > connections > lan settings) and eureka! i found the culprit.

As you can see, the laptop is set to use a proxy server, what you need to do is just remove the check mark under the proxy server.

Problem 2 solved.

How to: Slipstream Windows XP Service Pack & Making an Unattended WinXP Installer using NLite

This is a must especially if you always install windows, or you do it for a living like me. This also applies to WIndows 2000 and Windows 2003

Advantages:

1. You can integrate service packs, hotfixes, updates, drivers and themes to your installation cd so you don't need to redownload and install them everytime you need to reinstall Windows
2. You can even integrate programs that you regularly install after fresh installation of XP like antivirus, instant messaging programs like YM, Adobe reader, etc. so that you don't need to install them later
3. You can also remove unwanted programs/components from within windows.
4. nLite provides customize installation, you can make a fully unattended Setup CD so you just insert the cd, start installation, and take some coffee.

What you need:
1. nLite. If the download link don't work, there are some mirrors here.
2. .Net framework (nLite relies on this to work)
Note: you don't need to reinstall it, if your machine already have it. If you don't want to install it, you can also use FrameworkLite
3. Your Original windows installation CD
4. Service packs, if your CD don't have it yet.
5. WinXP patches (if you want an updated windows, and you don't want to run windows update after installation)
Note: I recommend RyanVM's post SP2 service pack
6. Drivers and Themes (if you want to integrate them to your CD)
7. Program Addons - YOu can choose from a lot of programs/applications here that you want to integrate to your installation CD
8. Coffee

Items 4-8 are optional if you just want an unattended installation CD

Steps:
1. Create a folder in your hard drive. Rename it, as you like. I use "WinXp Source" Copy the files in your installation cd to this folder.
2. Start Nlite. Click Next

3. Locate the installation file (the one that you copy from the cd) by clicking browse

4. Select the folder where you created it

5. nLite will automatically identify your source i.e., what version, service pack, language and size. Click NExt

6. You can load your last session if you have one or you can ignore this page totally. click next

7. This is the page where we ask nLite to do what we want. Click what you want to do, you can select all if you want. Click Next

8. Select the service pack that you want to integrate. if your installer is already updated with SP2, you can bypass this page by clicking Next.

9. Here is the page where you will integrate any hotfixes, updates, and addons you would like to add. (this is the page where you will insert RyanVM's update pack, and the addon programs that you like. Click insert. Then click next if you're done.

10. Next is the driver integration page. the same procedure as above

11. If you want to remove any windows default components, you can do it here. I usually bypass this page but if you are a power user and you want full control of your newly installed windows, this is a very useful tool. Click next.

12. Ok. Here is the the most important part if you want a fully unattended installation. This is where you will put the product key, so it will not ask you again, the regional component, default resolution, computer name, network id, network settings, etc. Just click on all the tabs to see the available options. If you do it right, you don't need to enter any information once you install Windows XP.

13. Some more useful options. If you don't know what it is, just leave it as it is. But there's no harm in experimenting. Click Next

14. Tweaks. Again, you can just bypass this page if you like

15. Next is applying the changes that you tell nLite to do. This will take some minutes depending on your machine and the number of tasks you ask nLite to perform.

16. Final part is making an ISO, this is important if you want a bootable installer. There are several mode, you can burn it directly to cd or you can create an ISO image so you can burn it later using your favorite burning program (ie Nero)

17. Click Next, and you are already finished.

IBM Thinkpad Error 0175: Bad CRC1, Stop POST task

A friend sent a laptop here in my shop. It's an IBM Thinkpad T20. After updating the bios, the said laptop won't boot. It shows this error: 0175, Bad CRC1, stop POST task. All google search points to one direction: a bad EEPROM and the only “solution” according to them is motherboard replacement. I can’t believe it is the only solution out there. Maybe someone can help me?

Disable Automatic Updates Nag Screen "Do You Want to Restart Your Computer Now"

This always pops in every ten minutes or so after a successful windows update.

Automatic Updates
Updating your computer is almost complete. You must restart your computer for the updates to take effect. Do you want to restart your computer now?
Restart Now, Restart Later

But if you are in a middle of something and restarting your pc is not an option, it can become really annoying.

Here's some tips to make to make it rest in peace.

WinXp Pro (Not for XpHome users)
1. Start>Run
2. In the run windows type "gpedit.msc" sans quote. Group Policy will appear
3. On the left pane, navigate through Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update.
4. On the right pane double-click on "Re-prompt for restart with scheduled installations"

5. A windows will appear. You can disable it totally, or you can set the minutes when it will prompt again.

6. Now click OK and close group policy

If you are an XPHome User, open up notepad, copy these texts

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU]
“RebootRelaunchTimeoutEnabled”=dword:00000001
“RebootRelaunchTimeout”=dword:000005a0
“NoAutoRebootWithLoggedOnUsers”=dword:00000001

and save it as norestart.reg (or any name you want. ".reg" is the important part)

double click and apply to your registry

Tip #3
If you don't want to thinker with the registry or the group policy editor, here is a program that enable or disable that nag screen.

What's in a Computer Technician's Toolbox?

Before you leave your shop/house and make a housecall, you should always check what's on your box. Here is a checklist of common tools you "might" need

1. Screwdriver - Even if it's a software problem that you will fix, you will never know when you will gonna use it. (Several times, i forgot to bring this, and i always blush when i asked the owner if he has one. What's a computer technician without a screwdriver?)
2. Paper Clip - Yes. You read it right. This small piece of metal saved me couple of times when i didn't bring my own cd/dvdrom. YOu will always encounter a CDROM/DVDROM drive that refuse to open.

3. PC speaker - You don't want to guess what's the problem of the CPU when you find out that it doesn't have pc speaker to help you know immeadiately the problematic part of the computer

4. CMOS Battery - Some motherboards especially those old ones need to have new battery to get rid of those annoying "CMOS CHECKSUM ERROR Press F1 blah blah blah"

5. Extra Memory - YOu can convert this to "EXTRA CASH" if you can convince the owner that he needs a memory upgrade if he/she wants to have a faster computer.
6. Tape - Masking Tape/ Scotch Tape / Packing Tape / Voice Tape j/k. You will never know when you will need it.
7. CD ROM / DVD ROM - Bring your own. Believe me, you never want to sit there the whole day praying that your installer CD will be read by your client's CDROM.
8. Tweezer - again you'll never know
9.
10.

I know i forgot to include several other "life saving" tools. So if you have any suggestion just leave a comment.

DSL Modem Password List

I'm planning to put up password list of known DSL modem here in the Philippines, but as i browse pinoydsl.net i happen to stumble on this thread. The good people there already compiled a list. I will copy it here, then edit, add the corresponding ip address of each modem too, and their respective provider. Special thanks to dslmaster. He's the threadstarter.

Identifying Beep Codes

Beep codes produced by a computer is very important for a Computer Technician. YOu can save a lot of time troubleshooting by just listening to these beep codes. That's why it is very important to bring your own PC speaker when you are in the field. I always encounter PC's that doesn't have a PC speaker, or if there is one, it is connected the wrong way (+ to - and vice versa) so make sure to check it first before doing anything else.

Old-school PC speaker

Small but terrible. This is what i bring whenever i'm on the road.

THe most common beeps that you will encounter 95% of the time in repairing PC's are:

1 beep - computer ok
continous beeps / long beeps - memory error
continous short beeps - bios boot block/corrupted bios
1 long beep followed by 3 short beeps - video card error

They are the most common/standard beep codes that you will encounter daily as a Computer Tech. However if you happen to came across other beep codes that are not listed above, you can check out this list

AMI BIOS

1 short - Computer ok
2 short - RAM failure
3 short - Parity RAM failure
4 short - System timer failure
5 short - Motherboard failure
6 short - Keyboard controller error
7 short - CPU failure
8 short - Video RAM failure
9 short - ROM BIOS error
10 short - CMOS read/write error
11 short - Cache RAM error
1 short, 3 long - Memory failure
1 short, 8 long - Video adapter failure

Check board/chipset makers website for more infomation.

AWARD BIOS

1 long - Memory error
1 long, 2 short - Video error
1 long, 3 short - Video failure
Continuous beeps - Memory or video failure

note that AWARD relies on motherboard manufacturers to develop their own beep codes - the above are only their own internal codes. You will need to refer to your own manual for an explanation of precise codes.

Standard IBM beep codes.

No beep - Power supply or motherboard failure
1 short - System is ok
2 short - POST error (code displayed on screen)
Repeating short - Motherboard failure
1 long, 1 short - Motherboard failure
1 long, 2 short - Video display adapter failure
1 long, 3 short - Video display adapter error
3 long - Keyboard error

Pheonix beep codes

1-1-3 CMOS memory failure

1-2-1 System timer error
1-2-2 Motherboard error
1-2-3 Motherboard error
1-3-1 Motherboard error
1-4-1 Motherboard error
1-4-2 Memory error
2-x-x Memory failure (any number of other beeps)

Missing Drivers, Unknown Device, and Other Devices

Sounds familiar? Yes, as a computer user we are very familiar with these words.

A missing driver can cause a lot of headaches for us computer technicians. Fortunately, there’s a lot you can do if you find yourself in this situation. First, you can easily search Google for the missing drivers, or you can visit the manufacturer’s website and search there.

But what if you can’t find an appropriate driver for your hardware because of being obsolete or the device manager can’t tell what is the offending hardware? You can easily make your own Windows XP CD and integrate driverpacks and latest updates from Microsoft. You can find that it will help you a lot in the future especially if you are on the road and your client doesn’t have an internet connection or on dial up (it will take a lot of your precious time if you use it for downloading large files.)

Sounds easy to make? You bet.

Here is what you need:

1. Windows XP installer, preferably with integrated SP2. (you can download SP2 here or here if your installer doesn’t come with it)
2. RyanVM’s Post SP2 update pack
3. Nlite
4. Driverpacks
5. driverpack base

If you don't know how to use the above softwares, i suggest you read their tutorials or step by step instructions. You just need a "little" time and patience if you can't get it right the first time.

You should start working on your customized cd with these steps:

1. Slipstream SP2 update to your WindowsXP CD using Nlite (if you already have WinXp with SP2, just go to number 2)
2. Apply ryanvm update. You can use Nlite or RyanVM's own Integrator
3. Integrate driverpacks using driverpack base
4. When it is all done, you can make a bootable ISO using Nlite.

HP Pavilion dv4000 sent in for repair

A laptop was brought in my computer repair shop today. It was an HP Pavilion dv4000. It has a widescreen LCD, 512 MB Memory, a 100Gb hard disk, DVD writer and an Altec Lansing speaker.

The owner said that it is newly formatted. But the problem is he cannot connect to the internet because the driver for his modem is missing. Upon inspection it turned out that it not just the modem driver but several other devices don’t have its drivers installed.

He requested that I format it again, install the appropriate drivers and software that he might need because he doesn’t have the back up cd or driver cd that came with it.

About the drivers, I can easily go the HP website and browse for the drivers, but I decided not to and instead make my own Windows Xp installer, slipstream the latest updates and add driver packs into it. (Click here for my blog article about making your own Windows Xp installer cd with complete drivers)

The result is a fully functional laptop, with the latest updates and drivers.

Until next time!

Parts inside your printer are at the end of their service life

A Service Error where you get a message telling you that "Parts inside your printer at the end of their service life, contact your dealer for replacement", or "Parts inside your printer require maintenance or replacement, call your service company", is normally a Maintenance Request Error. The maintenance request error is actually a Waste Ink Ink Pad Error and usually your remedy is:

1. Replace the Waste Ink Pad/Pads with a new one/ones (many people ignore this one, and they just follow #2)
2) Reset the Internal Waste Ink Pad Counter by using this utility

Prevent Autorun Viruses from Infecting Your Pc - How to Disable Autorun in Flash Drives

If you are looking for the Funny UST Scandal avi.exe remover, visit this link: http://techpinoy.blogspot.com/2007/11/funny-ust-scandal-aviexe-remover.html

Prevent autorun.inf Viruses from Infecting Your Pc

Prevention is better than cure.

Here are some examples of autorun viruses which rely on the autorun function of Windows to infect PC’s and flash drives.

Funny UST Scandal.avi.exe (latest one in the Philippines)
Autorun.vbs
win32.autorun.k
copy.exe
imgkulot
taga lipa are
autorun.vbs
recycler
FS6519.dll.vbs
strawberry from baguio
W32/Perlovga (copy.exe | host.exe)
VBS_RESULOWS.A (Hacked by Godzilla, Hacked by Moozilla)
Bha.dll.vbs
w32automa worm (Autorun.vbs)
Trojan.Win32.VB.atg | Win32/Dzan | Worm_vb.bnr (tel.xls.exe | mmc.exe)
W32/RJump.worm (RavMonE)
Worm.Win32.Delf.bf | W32.Fujacks (spoclsv.exe)
W32.Fujacks.BH (Fucker.vbs)
WORM_AGENT.PGV (soundmix.exe)
W32/Hakaglan.worm (RVHost.exe)
Trojan.Win32.VB.ayo [AVP] (Macromedia_Setup.exe)
Trojan.VBS.DeltreeY.b#1 (Destrukto!!! | destrukto.vbs)
etc.

To prevent these kinds of viruses on infecting your PC, you need to disable autorun function in your computer, unfortunately, just shutting down autoplay is not a fix. You might think that you could protect yourself from AutoRun by adding two (2) keys to your Registry (NoDriveAutoRun and NoDriveTypeAutoRun) but these keys can be overridden by some programs.

Solution is here:

1. Start Notepad [Start Menu-All Programs-Accessories-Notepad] or right-click any empty space in your desktop then select New-Text Document
2. Copy the following text. (note: Everything in between the square brackets should be in one line)

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\Autorun.inf]
@="@SYS:DoesNotExist"

3. Save the file with a name (anything) like DisableAutoRun.reg (The extension .reg is the important part)
4. Double Click your newly created registry file. Choose yes or continue to the warning that will appear.

But what if you are already infected with the virus? There are several programs on the internet that you can download. Here are some of those programs that can be helpful:

Taga Lipa Are Remover (or Noob Killer) by Leerz (<--click to download) NOOB KILLER can also cure some variant of those viruses listed above. Baguio Strawberry Removal Tool also by Leerz

Here's another one:

Flash Disinfector by sUBs (<--click to download) You can also use RRT or Remove Restriction Tool if the virus make changes to the system restriction. These restriction are most often:

1. Task Manager - Disable Ctrl+Alt+Del
2. Disable Folder Options
3. Disable Show hidden files
4. Disable the Run Command
5. Firewall
6. Internet Options

Hope these information help you.

PS.

Maybe someone can send me the Funny UST Scandal.avi.exe virus along with the autorun.inf.
