C-Media AC97 Audio Device - This Device Cannot Start. (Code 10)

Error Message:

Cannot start this hardware.

There was a problem installing this hardware:
C-Media AC97 Audio Device

There is no sound. When you open up Device Manager, there is a yellow exclamation mark on C-Media AC97 Audio Device. When you double click C-Media AC97 Audio Device, under device status, it says:
This device cannot start. (code 10)
Click troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

Probable Cause:
This is a common problem when you have Realtek AC97 chipset. Somehow Windows XP recognize Realtek sound device as C-Media AC97 Audio Device.

Download and install the latest version of Realtek AC97 driver and it should be fine. Here's a screenshot of a working one:

Sotec Winbook WV2150 - Audio and Video Driver WinXP/Vista

Here's a little info for those people looking for drivers of Sotec Winbook WV2150. I wish this will help those people having problems with the correct drivers because they can't identified the correct name/manufacturer/model of the hardware.

I recently installed a new hard drive into a Sotec Winbook WV2150. After doing a fresh install of Windows XP, the the audio and video card drivers are missing.

I used driverforge along with driver packs to install the missing drivers, but driverforge or maybe Windows itself incorrectly identified the sound card as C-Media AC'97. The device could not start according to the device manager, so the sounds don't work. The VGA was fine though, it is Sis 650_651_M650_M652_740. After some research, I found out that he correct sound card/audio driver should be Realtek AC'97 Audio Driver.

Here's a screenshot of the device manager of a working Sotec Winbook WV2150:

Audio/Sound Card: Realtek AC'97 Audio
Video/VGA: Sis 650_651_M650_M652_740
Modem: Smart Link 56K Voice Modem
LAN: SIS 900-Based PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter

Google Chrome Offline Installer

Chrome is one of the best internet browser out there. If not for firefox extensions, Google chrome will be my main browser. Google Chrome is faster than Firefox (in my experience), and I like its tidy screen. I also like how it handle searches and url type-ins.

I usually install Google Chrome to my client's PC so they will have an option of faster internet browsing. One problem though is it needs an internet connection to install. Here's an offline installer for those people who wants to install Google Chrome without an internet connection:

Front Panel Settings for Intel D845PT Socket 478 Motherboard

I recently replaced the motherboard of a client PC. The replacement motherboard is Intel D845PT. Unfortunately, there is no diagram for the On/Off switch, reset, HDD and power LED for the front panel on the motherboard. Here's a simple diagram for those people who needs it:

Solution: Network Connections Folder is Empty

1. You can't connect to the internet
2. Network Connections folder is empty
3. Local Area Connections (LAN) icon on taskbar missing
4. Can't connect to Wireless connections (icon also missing)

This thing happens when one of the three files below are missing on your computer:
1. netshell.dll
2. netcfgx.dll
3. netman.dll
Download those files if needed and place them on c:\windows\system32\ folder. After copying the files you need to register them. Click Start>Run>CMD and then type the following command (hit enter after each command).
regsvr32 netshell.dll
regsvr32 netcfgx.dll
regsvr32 netman.dll
Your Network Connections will now be back to normal.

How to Install Windows XP using a USB Drive / Flash Drive the EASIEST way

NOTE: I used Lenovo IdeaPad S10-2 as a test machine in this post but this will also work to any laptop/netbook/pc that can recognize USB devices as a boot option. This also works if you want to use Windows Vista.

The owner of this Lenovo S10-2 tried to upgrade his operating system to Windows Vista. The problem is he had some problem while installing it and his machine refused to load the OS. He also accidentally deleted the recovery partition, so the one-key recovery won't work to restore to factory default. The owner now wanted to install Windows XP instead of Vista.

I usually use my external DVD Rom drive for this kind of work (it's the easier than USB method) but it broke down a couple of days ago. So I have no other choice but to install from a flash drive).

Fortunately, installing from a USB drive is now easier than it used to be. There are programs out there that handle all the work for you. Unlike before that you need to fire up command prompt and issue some commands to prepare the flash drive/usb drive before it can be use to install Windows XP. That's the reason why I prefer installing from external DVD ROM drive before.

What you need:

1) An empty USB flash drive, at least 1 GB in size (Is it necessary to be empty? Yes, because the program we will use formats the USB drive before copying window files)
2) NoviCorp Wintoflash (download here)
(NOTE: As of this writing, the program is still in beta, though I have not encountered any error or problem using it, we all know that using beta softwares may cause problems or still has some bugs in it.)
3. Windows XP installer CD or a copy to your hard drive.

Steps on installing Windows Xp from Flash Drive:1. Prepare your flash drive. Run WinToFlash.exe and choose the wizard.

This one is self explanatory. Windows files path would be your Windows CD and USB drive is your flash disk. Next window will be copying the setup files to your flash drive. In took about 30 minutes in my test using a 2 GB KingMax flash drive (I believe this result may vary depending on the speed of your source and your USB drive).

2. Turn on your laptop. Enter BIOS by pressing F2. Make sure that SATA Controller Mode is set to Compatible under Configuration. If you do not do this, the windows installer will not see your hard disk upon setup. Now Save and Exit.

3. Upon restart press F12 to choose Boot Device. Select your Flash Drive from the list:

4. This window will appear. Select 1st, text mode setup (boot from flash again after finish) here. You will now see the usual setup process when you install windows from CD.

5. When the initial copying of files is finish and the system restarts, you need to boot from flash drive again. But this time you will choose the first option in the picture above. (2nd, GUI mode setup). You will choose this option until the next 2 restarts and the first boot of windows. If you let it boot in hard disk, you will receive the error:
Windows could not start because the following files is missing or corrupt:
Please re-install a copy of the above file.
If that happens, just restart your laptop and choose to boot from flash drive. Installation of windows finished after 35 minutes in my test. It may vary depending on the speed of your laptop and your USB drive.

How to Use Smitfraudfix | Tutorial | Download

What is SmitFraudFix?

SmitFraudFix is a freeware utility tool that specialized on spyware, malware and adware removal. What most antivirus software can't handle, SmitFraudFix can. It is very effective that I have this software in my flash drive all the time. If a client complained that their computer is very slow or are having annoying pop-ups and weird activities, I run this software first before doing any software troubleshooting. The maker (siri) updates this software regularly so I advise that you download the latest version first before using it to any computer.

Unfortunately, SmitFraudFix offers no real-time protection, which means that you can only remove parasites when your system has already been infected, and the damage could be already done.

Download SmitFraudFix

Alternative Download 1
Alternative Download 2

How to use SmitFraudFix

Special Notes: It is highly recommended that you use SmitFraudFix under Safe Mode for maximum removal. I encountered some malware that prevents SmitFraudFix from running or adware that refuse to be deleted. Booting in Safe Mode prevents these kind of problems. In case you still want to run smitfraudfix in normal mode, save all your work first because smitfraudfix closes some if not all programs running. Smitfraudfix also replaces your wallpaper after running (this is because, some adware/malware changes the wallpaper to scare the user that their system is infected with viruses that were never there).

1. Boot in Safe Mode. Log-on using the Administrator account or any account that has administrator privileges. You may also want to turned off system restore.
2. Run SmitFraudFix.

3. A window will appear. Press any key at the first screen.

4. Select number 2 and press enter to clean any infection your computer might have.

5. A window will appear that will ask you if you want to clean the registry. Answer Y (yes) and press Enter in order to remove the hijacked Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection. Sometimes it will seem like your computer hangs up at this stage. That is normal. It will take 3 minutes up to one hour depending on the computer. Though, I usually closes the window if it takes 10 minutes or more (I'm not that patient when it comes to this thing) and then fire up explorer.exe.

6. Restart your computer to normal mode.

If you are still experiencing some adware/malware/spyware infections, you can use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Tool (MBAM) or download noob killer by leerz in conjunction with smitfraudfix.

Known spyware/adware/malware that SmitFraudFix can remove:

Smart Bro Share-It in Cavite - WiFi Router

Is Smartbro Share It available in Cavite area?

Quick answer:
Yes and No.

Edit: (October 21, 2009) Smartbro Shaire It is now available in Dasmarinas Area

Edit: (October 7, 2009) Just got home from Divine Grace Medical Center and they have Smartbro Share-It connection. So I'm sure that it is available in Tejero, Gen. Trias area. Although, I'm not sure at the surrounding towns (Noveleta, Tanza, Kawit, Rosario) if it is available now. It will be better if you will go to Smart Wireless Center at SM Bacoor to inquire.

As of this writing it is only available in Bacoor, Silang and Tagaytay City. That is according to their representative at Smart Wireless Center in SM Bacoor. Unfortunately, I live in Noveleta and HSDPA connection is not yet available here. I get 3G signal here though, so I thought Smart Bro Share It is available here. According to their representative, HSDPA signal is required. Even though I'm not sure about that, I have choice but to look for another service.

For several months now, I am in search of a decent internet connection to use in my home. PLDT MyDSL, Globe Broadband and Digitel DSL do not have connection in our area (yeah, I live in a very remote place, sort of lol) I tried applying to Smart Bro (the one with the canopy) but there are trees blocking in the canopy's line of sight to their tower. Right now, I'm using my Nokia 6120 phone + smart SIM when I want to connect to the internet. The only downside is, it is not unlimited. I want unlimited connection when in comes to my internet usage. It is not practical for me as I spent large amount of time online.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware - A Must-have Computer Technician's Tool

Download Malwarebytes Anti Malware here

This tool/software saved my as* a couple of times now. This is a must-have for computer technicians and even for normal PC user. It's amazingly simple yet effective removal tool for malware, rootkits, worms, trojans, viruses, spyware and other malicious programs .

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is an anti-malware application that can thoroughly remove even the most advanced malware. It includes a number of features, including a built in protection monitor that blocks malicious processes before they even start.

Detection capabilities of MBAM is great, , as claimed by the developers, many times it discovered malware like rootkits, worms, trojans, viruses, spyware and other malicious programs that weren’t detected by other anti-malware programs like anti-viruses and anti-trojans. MBAM was also able to detect the recent XP Antivirus 2008/2009 malware programs and removed this crap entirely. I am even more enthousiastic about the cleaning capabilities of MBAM, all discovered malware was cleaned/removed 100%, without leaving any traces.
MBAM offer support for Windows 2000, XP, and Vista, and is free. However, the full (paid) version unlocks realtime protection, scheduled updating and scheduled scanning. If you like the program, I advice to opt for the full version. Price: a one time fee of $24.95. That's cheaper than hiring a computer technician to do the same job.

How to get rid of "It now now safe to turn off your computer" screen in Windows 2000/Win2k

Laptop Model: IBM Thinkpad iSeries/ i Series 1400 (2611-452)
OS/Operating System: Windows 2000 / Win2k
Processor: Celeron
Memory/RAM: 64 MB

After changing the hard disk drive of an IBM Thinkpad iSeries laptop and doing a reformat, I encountered this fairly common problem. When I turn the laptop off, instead of automatically powering down, it displays the message:

It is now safe to turn off your computer

This thing was common on the days of Windows 98 and AT type computer. But in laptops, this should not happen (also on ATX-type computer).

3. Click on APM tab and put a check on Enable Advanced Power Management Support

And that's it.

Everything You Need to Know About Windows 7

The following article will answer the most important questions about Microsoft’s upcoming operating system Windows 7, basically everything you need to know about Windows 7 to be prepared for the upcoming release. We have decided to create the article in a form that resembles faq pages to make it easier to read.

What’s the current stage of development?

The release candidate will be released publicly in the coming week. It will be available for 1-2 months and expire in mid 2010 giving every user enough time to test if they have the desire to do so.

When will Windows 7 be released?

Microsoft has not revealed a release date for their new operating system yet. Most experts think that it will either be released in the fourth quarter of 2009 or at the latest in the first quarter of 2010.

What are the hardware requirements?

Microsoft has published hardware requirements for Windows 7 Beta. It is expected that the same requirements will be valid for Windows 7 Final. It is generally accepted that computers that are running Windows Vista will be capable of running Windows 7 as well.

Which editions of Windows 7 will be released?

Microsoft will release six editions of Windows 7. Not all of them will be made available worldwide though:

  • Windows 7 Starter - Designed for low end computer systems like netbooks, comes with severe limitations.
  • Windows 7 Home Basic - Designed for emerging markets only.
  • Windows 7 Home Premium - Worldwide available, one of the main end user systems that comes with a solid feature set.
  • Windows 7 Professional - Worldwide available, aimed at small to medium sized businesses, professionals and enthusiasts.
  • Windows 7 Ultimate - Will only be available online
  • Windows 7 Enterprise - Same as Windows 7 ultimate but only available to organizations and large companies.

What are the differences between the six Windows 7 editions?

Each version builds up on each other: Windows 7 Starter -> Windows 7 Home Basic -> Windows 7 Home Premium -> Windows 7 Professional -> Windows 7 Ultimate / Enterprise

All 32-bit editions will support a maximum of 4 Gigabytes of computer memory. The 64-bit editions will support the following amounts:

Starter / Home Basic: 8GB
Home Premium: 16GB
Professional / Ultimate / Enterprise: 192GB

What are the major changes to previous operating systems like Windows Vista?

Windows 7 feels in many regards like an optimized version of Windows Vista. It runs on the same computer hardware and combines better performance across the board. Some of the major changes are:

  • Improved interface
  • Better performance, i.e. startup times, system load
  • UAC improvements
  • Evolved kernel
  • Virtualization
  • Touch support, hardware sensors
  • New and improved software programs
  • Homegroup networking
  • Better Troubleshooting, Windows Solution Center
  • Better Customization, e.g. custom themes, wallpapers
Will Microsoft provide upgrade opportunities?

Microsoft will provide upgrade opportunities both for Windows XP and Windows Vista users. Free upgrades are provided for users who purchase a computer system with Windows Vista after July 1, 2009. Not all versions are however eligible for the upgrade. Upgrades are only available for systems of the same language and the only allowed upgrade paths are

  • Windows Vista Home Premium -> Windows 7 Home Premium
  • Windows Vista Business -> Windows 7 Professional
  • Windows Vista Ultimate -> Windows 7 Ultimate

There will be no free upgrade for all other versions of Windows Vista that are purchased after July 1.

How are the updates installed?

Windows XP users need to perform a clean install. This is the only way to upgrade to Windows 7 except for the possibility to first upgrade to Windows Vista and then to Windows 7 if copies of both operating systems are available. Windows Vista users can perform the upgrades right away. The upgrade paths are the same as for the free Vista to Windows 7 upgrades.

  • Windows Vista Home Premium -> Windows 7 Home Premium
  • Windows Vista Business -> Windows 7 Professional
  • Windows Vista Ultimate -> Windows 7 Ultimate

Every other combination has to be installed doing a fresh install.

How much will Windows 7 cost?

Microsoft has not revealed any information about the pricing of Windows 7 yet. It is likely that prices will be in the same range of Windows Vista and that the prices for Vista will drop a bit to reflect that. Expected prices will therefor be in the following price ranges.

  • Windows 7 Home Premium: $100-$150
  • Windows 7 Professional: $200-$250
  • Windows 7 Ultimate: $300-$350

Free Tool that Prevents USB Flash Drive Infection

The Microsoft Windows Operating Systems use the AUTORUN.INF file from removable drives in order to know which actions to perform when a new external storage device, such as a USB drive or CD/DVD, is inserted into the PC. The AUTORUN.INF file is a configuration file that is normally located in the root directory of removable media and contains, among other things, a reference to the icon that will be shown associated to the removable drive or volume, a description of its content and also the possibility to define a program which should be executed automatically when the unit is mounted.

The problem is that this feature, widely critizised by the security community, is used by malware in order to spread by infecting as soon as a new drive is inserted in a computer. The malware achieves this by copying a malicious executable in the drive and modifying the AUTORUN.INF file so that Windows opens the malicious file silently as soon as the drive is mounted. The most recent examples of this are the W32/Sality, W32/Virutas and also the W32/Conficker worm which, in addition to spreading via a vulnerability and network shares, also spreads via USB drives.

Due to the large amount of malware-related problems associated with Microsoft AutoRun we have created a free utility for our user community called Panda USB Vaccine.

Computer Vaccination

The free Panda USB Vaccine allows users to vaccinate their PCs in order to disable AutoRun completely so that no program from any USB/CD/DVD drive (regardless of whether they have been previously vaccinated or not) can auto-execute. This is a really helpful feature as there is no user friendly and easy way of completely disabling AutoRun on a Windows PC.

USB Vaccination

The free Panda USB Vaccine can be used on individual USB drives to disable its AUTORUN.INF file in order to prevent malware infections from spreading automatically. When applied on a USB drive, the vaccine permanently blocks an innocuous AUTORUN.INF file, preventing it from being read, created, deleted or modified. Once applied it effectivelly disables Windows from automatically executing any malicious file that might be stored in that particular USB drive. The drive can otherwise be used normally and files (even malware) copied to/from it, but they will be prevented from opening automatically. Panda USB Vaccine currently only works on FAT & FAT32 USB drives.

If you want to re-enable AUTORUN.INF , just click remove vaccine ( I don't reccomend this unless you absoulutely have to remove the vaccine).

How to Change Password on Windows XP / 7 without knowing the Original Password

This is useful for many occasions such as if you forget the password to your primary account on your computer but still have access to another 0ne or if you simply want to prank your brother.

This has been tested on both Windows XP and Windows 7.

For this to work you must have access to another account because you have to use Command Prompt or CMD to change the password.

Here is how to do it:
  • Open Command Prompt (CMD) by going to Start -> Run -> cmd.exe
  • Type in ‘net users’. This will show you a list of all the accounts on the computer. This is just to check and make sure you know the EXACT username of the account you want to change the password for.
  • Next, you need to type in ‘net user (whatevertheusernameis)

  • Next you shall get a prompt asking you for the new password:

Finally it shall ask you to repeat the new password, click enter and BAM, you have now changed the password without knowing the original one.
